Ryo Katayama's inspiration for MARACA came from his childhood experiences. He observed that most children are unable to assist in cooking due to the potential dangers in the kitchen. Recognizing the joy and communication that cooking can bring, especially when done with parents or friends, Katayama sought to create a kitchen tool that would allow children to participate in the cooking process safely and enjoyably.
The unique property of MARACA lies in its simplicity and efficiency. Katayama discovered that shaking cream with three sticks containing gear-like shapes made whipping cream easy. He coined this device the "Gear stick beater". The beater features three flower gears, with the top gear being larger than the others. This design allows for easy cleaning with a rubber spatula.
The design of MARACA was not without its challenges. Katayama had to overcome the obstacle of limited equipment for making mock-up models. Despite this, he was able to use inexpensive materials to create his prototypes. His research focused on finding a design that could make whipping cream easily and promptly, and that would be suitable for children who lacked the strength for traditional methods.
His efforts were rewarded when MARACA won the Silver A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and that evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
In conclusion, Ryo Katayama's MARACA is a testament to the power of design in transforming everyday activities. It is a tool that not only simplifies the process of whipping cream but also makes cooking a more inclusive and enjoyable experience for children. With its innovative design and award-winning recognition, MARACA is set to revolutionize home baking.
